On our way back from snowboarding at Glenshee, we went in search of frozen lochs and found this arctic scene.

Camping on Skye - Scottish landscape photography

We're just back from a quick (and very wet) camping trip on Skye. This was our first visit to this beautiful island (disgraceful we know, but at least Jay has an excuse being Canadian - I don't!). It was made all the better by the fact that we were joined by Jay's little sister, Elyse, who has been visiting us for the past week before heading home to Ontario to start university.

Glencoe is always spectacular - we can't get enough of it. In this photo Elyse & Jay are hiding the fact they are being attacked by midges from every direction rather well.

After driving through hours of rain showers we got really, really lucky. The skies were blue as we drove across the bridge and this was the view that awaited us...

Elyse and I 'researched' the local brewery while Jay did his landscape thing...

Despite waking up yesterday to grey skies and a very soggy campsite, it was a lovely end to a fantastic week.

Have a safe flight home Elyse, we miss you already!

St Cyrus beach - Scottish landscape photography

Yesterday we spent the afternoon wandering St Cyrus beach and enjoying the great weather. The light was wonderful and the beach was near empty, so it was lucky I dragged along all my gear with me!

Black & white

Jay loves to take landscape photographs. And I love to take photos of Jay as he takes landscape photographs. I also love to eat Snickers bars and drink cups of flask tea on these outings.

Around 99.37% of my photographs feature people, but on this recent day out I was very excited to be trying out my new camera (which is an old film camera that Jay tracked down for me for Christmas) and couldn't resist catching a couple of scenic shots of my own.

Winter wonderland

It's hard to believe that we only had to travel 60 miles north-west from Edinburgh to find lots of lovely snow. Of course, the recent drop in temperature left Jay feeling completely justified in dragging me out of bed at ridiculous o'clock this morning. But then again I'm glad he did.

A morning in the Pentlands

There are two things that are guaranteed to get Jay out of bed early in the morning - snowboarding and the possibility of a beautiful sunrise.

After attending a fantastic talk on landscape photography by Martin Pettinger in St Andrews last night, I had a sneaking suspicion of what was coming. This was confirmed when I saw Jay tinkering with the alarm clock.

And so it was that we headed towards the Pentlands under cover of darkness this morning, me clutching my flask of tea for moral support. I'd like to say our car was the first in the car park but two over-eager walkers had beaten us to it.

While the stunning sunrise failed to materialise, the brooding sky was perfect for some moody black and whites. And over the course of our 10-mile hike Jay was able to get some fantastic shots.

Meanwhile, I concentrated on reducing the load of my backpack by steadily munching my way through our Kit-Kat supply.

Perthshire & Angus landscapes

It's been a while since Jay had time to indulge his passion for landscape photography. A trip up north last weekend presented the perfect opportunity. Here are a few of his shots...

Edinburgh by night

Jay has just returned from a sunset/night shoot (I chose to stay at home by the warmth of the fire!). With the clocks having gone back at the weekend the sun was beginning to set today at around 4.30 (sigh, how long is it until spring?). I do love winter's glorious sunsets though, and tonight's resulted in some great urban landscapes.

Scottish Highlands photography

Here are a couple of photographs from our trip to the Highlands last week. Eilean Donan Castle looked amazing as always, particularly against the autumnal backdrop.

We stayed near Torridon, which has quickly become a favourite spot. Last month we photographed a beautiful wedding there and Claire and Jeffery inspired us to come back and do a spot of hillwalking and kayaking ourselves.

With this being October the weather wasn't quite as kind to us, but at least only two of our party of four went for an accidental bath in Loch Torridon!
